Marketa Marcanikova Haughey is a PhD candidate in the Bioengineering Department at Clemson University in South Carolina. Under supervision of her advisor, Dr. Melinda Harman, she participates in multidisciplinary research related to ostomy care in nursing practice including collaboration with the School of Nursing and the Department of Industrial Engineering at Clemson University, and healthcare providers at Prisma Health Upstate. Mrs. Haughey uses human factors approaches and an advanced clinical simulation laboratory to explore ostomy pouch procedures performed by variety of nurses with different credentials. The broad objective of her research is to advance the understanding of current practices in ostomy nursing care and how people living with a stoma perform self-care in home settings. In addition to her research, Mrs. Haughey serves as a senior teaching assistant in the Bioengineering Department, teaching laboratory skills in tissue engineering to undergraduate students. She was recognized as “Bioengineering TA of the Year” in 2021. Mrs. Haughey is also performing a certificate in Engineering and Science Education in the Engineering and Science Education Department and finds an interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning and education outreach. In 2023, she earned Clemson University Graduate Mentor certification.
