Nancy Bergstrom PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Center on Aging in the School of Nursing

Dr. Nancy Bergstrom, Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Center on Aging in the School of Nursing, received her PhD from the University of Michigan and has been employed by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and by UTHealth since completion of her education. She has conducted research related to predicting and preventing pressure ulcers for nearly 30 years, co-creating and testing the Braden Scale for Preventing Pressure Sore Risk (1980s), chairing panels (Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, now Agency for Healthcare Quality) that created the first clinical practice guidelines for the prediction and prevention and for the treatment of pressure ulcers (1990s). She directed 3 large R01s (two multi-site) funded by NIH, NINR as Principal Investigator (1980- present), and served as principal or co-investigator or consultant on numerous projects from additional funding sources. The TURN Study, a multi-site, clinical trial to determine the efficacy of turning at risk elderly residents cared for on high density foam replacement mattresses at intervals of 2, 3, or 4 hours was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in October, 2013. Dr. Bergstrom is currently presenting data from the study, speaking about practice implications and patient safety. Dr. Bergstrom has numerous publications in top-tier nursing and interdisciplinary journals. She is the recipient of many honors and awards, most notably the first Kosiak Award from the NPUAP, Life Time membership in WOCN, and was inducted in the first class of the STTI Nursing Research Hall of Fame.
