Rafael J. Diaz-Garcia MD, FACS

Dr. Diaz-Garcia was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but grew up in the NY metro area. He attended Villanova University on a Presidential Scholarship, graduating summa cum laude in 2003. He received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as the Albert Stunkard Scholar, graduating with AOA honors. He then commenced his post-graduate training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System. During his surgical training, he developed a passion for limb salvage. He relocated to the city of Pittsburgh to complete a Hand and Upper Extremity fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. As a fellow, he furthered his interests in reconstruction of complex hand/wrist/elbow trauma and limb salvage. He has a busy clinical practice focused on maximizing limb function after trauma and sarcoma, which includes peripheral nerve surgery, management of fractures, and complex wound management with microsurgery.

Dr. Diaz-Garcia has authored articles in journals such as the Journal of Hand Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and book chapters in texts of orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and serves as the System Division Chief of Plastic Surgery for the Allegheny Health Network (AHN), a 10-hospital system in Western PA. He has been involved in the conception and leadership of a product value analysis committee for his health system. He also serves as the Medical Director for Supply Chain & GPO for AHN. He currently is in the Master’s Program in Healthcare Management at Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins.
