Supported by: Hollister Incorporated: Despite improvements in surgical techniques and ostomy product availability, the incidence of peristomal skin complications remains remarkably high; reported rates are greater than 75%, are not limited to one group or region, and are associated with significantly lower quality of life. Recent research also suggests that patients frequently fail to recognize and report peristomal skin complications. While we now have a number of studies reporting on the incidence and type of peristomal complications, we lack evidence as to strategies for preventing these complications. This presentation will provide a review of the current literature regarding the incidence and impact of peristomal complications, and will explore both clinical and “systems” issues potentially contributing to the problem as the patient moves through the care continuum. A major focus will be on the WOC/ET nurse role in reducing complications and improving outcomes, and specific strategies will be suggested and explored, including a model for maintaining peristomal skin health.
