Health care delivery over the last decade has been changing so rapidly that it is hard to keep up with the ever-changing alphabet soup of policies and programs that impact patient care. This session will cover the regulations around hospital-acquired events, and the role of wound ostomy continence nurses in leading improvements in patient outcomes.

This interactive session will pose case presentations, clinical situations and problems that are encountered in the daily practice of ostomy care. The cases will include pediatric and adult patients, presented by two advanced practice WOC nurses. The audience will be asked to provide suggestions for care, to point out areas that may not have a solution and to suggest what needs to be considered when managing challenging patient presentations. The attendees are the presenters; this session will be a moderated peer to peer discussion with questions and answers from the audience. Come prepared to discuss ostomy practice with your WOC nurse colleagues!

This session will have three speakers focusing on different aspects of care of the pediatric and adolescent bariatric patient. First Dr. Prout will discuss the medical management of childhood obesity, second Ms. Stellar will present common skin and wound concerns in the pediatric and adolescent bariatric patient, and lastly Dr. Bishop will present common the psychosocial aspects of childhood obesity.
Part 1
This section will explore the medical management of bariatric care in the pediatric and adolescent patient, including diagnostic work-up, diet, medications, and indications for surgical interventions.
Part 2
This section will discuss common skin and wound concerns in the pediatric and adolescent bariatric patient including dressings and products for care.
Part 3
Adverse childhood experiences can influence obesity. How do these experiences shape child into adulthood? This section will focus on psychosocial considerations of obesity and how early experiences give shape to obesity.
At the completion of this session the learner will be able to verbalize common medical, psycho-social and skin and wound concerns in the pediatric and adolescent bariatric patient, and outline guidelines for transitioning to adult care.

Join Dustienne Miller PT, MS, WCS as she returns to WOCN to share her knowledge of integrating yoga and pelvic health!
Participants will experience how to integrate the breath and pelvic floor in seated and standing yoga postures to optimize pelvic health and continence.
Learn how to integrate this at home, in the hospital, and across the care continuum.

This presentation will focus on role of the pelvic floor in maintaining urinary and fecal continence. Current research on the structure and function of the pelvic floor will be reviewed, as well as how pelvic floor dysfunction can negatively impact bladder and bowel health. Research examining the effectiveness of pelvic floor muscle training in preventing incontinence will be discussed.

Effective compression isn’t just about product selection, it is also about product application. Utilizing the S.T.R.I.D.E.™ method, will explore the science of compression therapy as well as provide practical ‘How-To’ tips when utilizing compression for chronic edema/chronic non-healing wound management of the lower extremity. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice application technique for a 2-layer cohesive compressive wrap during the ‘hands-on’ lab.

This presentation will provide a broad review of current scientific evidence related to the role of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training in the management of urinary and fecal incontinence. Recent evidence related to effectiveness of PFT training in urinary and fecal incontinence will be summarized. Where available, specific information will be presented in relation to utilization of PFM exercises in specific patient groups including women, men who have radical prostatectomies, older adults and frail older adults. The results of studies examining the effectiveness of combine PFM training and pharmacologic treat will also be summarized.

Despite advances in research and technology, implementation of evidence-based practices remains suboptimal, and the lag time from research to implementation often takes decades. Additionally, 1 in 4 hospitalized patients suffer from preventable harm. Therefore, there is a need to develop effective strategies to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice in order to effectively and sustainably reduce patient harm. Agile Implementation model is an implementation tool has been effectively utilized to improve the delivery of evidence-based care in hospital settings.
