The post op phenomena of a high-output ileostomy is challenging for both patient and staff and requires the involvement and expertise of the WOC Nurse. In the post-acute setting it takes vigilance and skill to avoid patient dehydration and readmission. In this session, hear from a renown colorectal surgeon who will explain the pathophysiology related to the phenomenon and the step-wise pharmacological interventions from her practice along with rationale. An acute care WOC nurse will outline the care priorities and education strategies employed prior to discharge and an advanced practice WOC Nurse provider will share an outpatient regimen for follow-up, monitoring of laboratory values and rehydration to avoid readmission. Join this session to ensure your practice is up-to-date regarding this post-operative conundrum.

Objectives:
  • The learner will apply care concepts to individualize the management and treatment of patients with high output ileostomies across the continuum, focusing on prevention of dehydration and hospital readmission.

As a society, we have embraced technology in our homes and lives. As professionals, we have embraced technology in our work … well, hold on there …sometimes we have. Technology has been developed to help us find early changes in the skin and soft tissue to identify pressure injuries not yet visible. Technology has also been invented to help us track which patients need to be turned, how high the interface pressure is under them and to signal staff to move high risk patients. And there is more…there are devices that wick away urine and signal the nurse that the patient has voided. Apps also exist to bring us closer to guidelines for our work. So why am I comfortable with cruise control on my car, but not with an app to tell me the patient needs to be turned? This session will introduce you to the developed technologies for pressure injury prevention and perhaps change your view of technology for pressure injury prevention!

Objectives:
  • Describe advances in technology that can assist with pressure injury prevention.

Over the last year, skin protection reached new urgency in clinical practice as well as for the general public. The causes of skin injury are diverse, and the etiology of the skin problem must always be correctly identified. This symposia session will highlight the latest evidence on prevention and treatment of IAD, MARSI and MDRPI. At the end of the session, this year’s Safe Skin Award Recipients will be recognized for their award-winning prevention program.

Objectives:
  • Apply the latest evidence in preventing and treating skin injuries from IAD MARSI and MDRPI.

New evidence influences health care decisions every day. It is important to stay current with new data and research to deliver impactful patient care. During this session, panelists will discuss their wound healing perspectives and ways they have adapted to change during this pandemic, while demonstrating real-world scenarios and patient case outcomes for the way new data has made a difference in their practice.

Objectives:
  • Discuss their wound healing perspectives and ways they have adapted to change during the pandemic.
  • Share the evolution of instillation therapy within newly published evidence and the ways it has made a difference in their practice.
  • Discuss the many uses of instillation therapy on a variety of wounds, from simple to complex.
  • Demonstrate real-world scenarios and patient case outcomes, and how new innovations have influenced wound management practices over recent years.

There now exists an array of Negative Pressure Wound Therapy options. Until recently, no established recommendations or guidance existed regarding the type of NPWT system to use. Join this session to learn from Dr. Theresa Hurd and Dr. Rafael Diaz-Garcia, two expert clinicians who contributed to the 2021 publication, International Consensus Panel Recommendations for the Optimization of Traditional and Single-Use Negative Pressure Wound Therapy in the Treatment of Acute and Chronic Wounds.

Does it sound complicated or overwhelming to implement clinical and operational changes within your institution? This session will allow you to learn first-hand from clinicians that have enacted change and experienced positive results.

Objectives:
  • Demonstrate through clinical evidence and case presentation the clinical role and efficacy of tNPWT and sNPWT.
  • Describe the validated recommendations and clinical decision-making tools available to optimize the use of tNPWT and sNPWT.

The past year has been a long journey, filled with challenges, unexpected insights and solutions. The ability of WOC nurses to adapt and continue to provide excellent care for patients during a global pandemic is unprecedented. Join us in discussing the lessons learned, and how Moldable technology has made an impact on patients and nurses in a changing healthcare environment.

Objectives:
  • Impact of COVID-19 on WOC Clinical Practices across the country
  • Discuss the basics of stomal assessment, stomal complications and ostomy care management strategies
  • Describe the benefits of Moldable Technology and its impact on ostomy management

Health care clinicians like nurses are socialized to give hiqh quality care to their patients but not necessarily about the need to invest in themselves. This session will explore the crucial nature of personal empowerment in promoting a healthy life and catalyzing professional empowerment as well. Success in personal and professional empowerment is really about hard work, strategic choices, and healthy persistence. Attendees will be able to ask questions about personal challenges and opportunities.

Objectives:
  • Analyze crucial components and processes inherent in personal and professional empowerment.

An assessment is the foundation that can direct you to the best solution for your ostomy patients. For many clinicians, this is a natural practice... but how does one address those unique body profiles and stoma characteristics in clinical practice? What if you could sharpen your approach to that assessment and further define the right solution? In this session you will hear from a panel of experts sharing thoughts on specific case studies, a systematic approach to assessment, and share best practice options for this unique patient population.

Objectives:
  • The learner will understand how to implement the body profile assessment into their practice and recognize the impact of this solution-based approach.

Venous leg ulcers are debilitating, hard to heal wounds that can profoundly affect the patients’ physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. These wounds have a high recurrence rate and are associated with pain, wound odor, and high levels of exudate and bioburden, with a large percentage becoming chronic. Current therapeutic approaches are multifaceted and focus on improved symptom management and wound healing, including compression therapy and advanced wound care.

Objectives:
  • Learn the etiology of venous leg ulcers.
  • Learn the importance of early and appropriate interventions in these complex wounds.
  • Learn wound treatment and dressing choice matter - using modalities synergistically in the effective management of these challenging wounds optimizes wound outcomes.

Following admission to a facility, medical device related pressure injuries occur more quickly than other types of pressure injuries. This is especially significant to both the patient and caregiver population when considering the provision of care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first part of this symposium will discuss the implementation of a step-by-step system-wide pressure injury prevention program and the positive outcomes of a two-fold medical device related pressure injury prevention protocol by providing guidance to caregivers with personal protective equipment (PPE) and COVID-19 patients undergoing prone positioning to support lung function.

Simultaneously, managing wounds adds to the already overloaded healthcare system. Seventy percent of dressing changes are driven by schedules and unnecessary dressing changes consume valuable time that could be used for patient’s other clinical needs. The reality is that healthcare providers are asked to do more with less. The second part of the symposium will examine the T.I.M.E clinical decision support tool used as an evidenced-based, five-step approach that incorporates T.I.M.E principles into a framework that nurses and other professionals can follow within their procedural guidelines. Interactive real-life case studies will be discussed to help participants quickly identify the barriers to wound healing and gain confidence to make the right treatment choice.

The presenters will then review why ALLEVYN LIFE may be the ideal multi-layer foam dressing for use as part of a comprehensive pressure injury prevention plan and for the management of wound exudate.

Objectives:
  • Recognize the essential steps to implement a prevention pressure injury program with the inclusion of resource tools, leadership involvement, EMR integration, documentation, and education.
  • Discuss the positive outcomes of a two-fold MDRPI prevention protocol by providing guidance to caregivers with PPE and Covid-19 patients undergoing positioning to support lung function.
  • Identify the five-step approach of the T.I.M.E clinical support tool.
  • Discuss real life case studies.
  • Review the considerations for the utilization of a multi-layer foam dressing.
