WOC Nursing Management of Parastomal Hernias

Session Description:
Parastomal hernias can be a perplexing and frustrating problem for those with an ostomy. This session will describe the etiology of parastomal hernias and their impact on patient quality of life. Both the surgical and the WOC nurse perspectives will be presented, including indications and options for medical or surgical interventions. A surgeon will describe methods for prevention and repair, together with outcomes. The WOC nurse will address challenges to stable, successful pouching, and management techniques that address these challenges.

Learning Objective:

  • The learner will better understand strategies that can be used to improve ostomy issues for patients with parastomal hernias.
