All the major guidelines on the management of urinary incontinence have agreed that conservative management should be first line approach. WOC nurses are in the unique position to provide such care as part of their continence practices. This session will use a case study format to address how WOC nurses can incorporate into their day to day practice first line strategies for the treatment of urinary incontinence. Each case will highlight the need for a thorough assessment, accurate diagnosis and application of first line patient specific treatment approaches such as lifestyle modifications, dietary and fluid management, stress and urgency prevention strategies, and a common sense bedside approach to teaching patients about pelvic muscle exercises. A brief review of evidence supporting interventions will be included and discussion on when to refer for further evaluation and management.
