Urinary tract infections is one of the top 10 reasons for admission to a hospital among the elderly. Over half of the residents in most skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes experience fecal and/or urinary incontinence. Nearly 30% of home bound seniors have untreated incontinence, contributing to their being home bound. The fastest growing segment of the population are those 65 and older. These facts compel us to address the need for educated and caring nurses in the field of continence nursing. We need to change the idea that only nurses who participate in urodynamics are "continence nurses". All nurses should participate in continence nursing and certified continence nurses should lead the charge. This session will review the critical importance of continence nursing in the 21st century.
