Fistulas can be difficult and challenging for the WOC nurse. This workshop will provide a review of the evidence for fistula management, and overview of fistula occurrence. Nutrition and medication options will be discussed. The primary focus will be management of the effluent, perifistular skin protection and healing of the wounds that often surround the fistula. This session will be care-based, utilizing actual patient scenarios to depict management techniques including pouching with suction and negative pressure wound therapy. Video will be used to demonstrate some techniques and the attendees will have the opportunity for hands-on practice of one or more of the techniques using pictures of fistulas and a variety of supplies that WOC nurses could have in their practice settings.
