Description

Patient characteristics and medical condition create challenges for both the surgeon and the WOC nurse when the need for an ostomy occurs. This session will provide an overview of common stoma complications and will discuss stoma complications using a collaborative team approach. A surgeon will present the current surgical procedures, advanced new technology, and surgical techniques that aid in the prevention of stoma complications. Pre/post-operative physical assessment, stoma assessment, identification of stoma complications, and management techniques from the WOC nurse perspective will be presented.

Objectives:

  1. Describe current surgical procedures, new technology, and techniques to prevent stoma complications
  2. Describe assessment and management techniques related to stoma complications
