Description

Fistulas can be difficult and challenging for the WOC nurse. This session will provide a review of the evidence for fistula management. The primary focus will be management of the effluent, perifistular skin protection and healing of the wounds that often surround the fistula. This session will be care-based, utilizing actual patient scenarios to depict pouching techniques with and without suction and negative pressure wound therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Name 3 ways to protect perifistular skin.
  • Describe isolating a fistula with a pouch and placing a dressing on the wound surrounding the fistula.
  • Explain pouching a fistula and wound together.
