Description

When incontinence is managed with best practice principles / initiatives, this decreases the incidence of care sensitive adverse events (CSAE) such as: pressure ulcers, falls and hospital acquired urinary tract infection (HAUTI), functional incontinence and epidermal damage and infection. Our purpose was to develop and implement a continence protocol for adults in acute care in a large community based hospital in western Canada.

Learning Objectives:

  • Schedule toileting and initiate into patient care plans
  • Identify protective functions to the skin
  • Identify what mechanism trigger damage to the protective barrier of the skin
  • Recogize patient functional incontinence
  • Identify Pressure Ulcer vs. Incontinence associated dermatitits
  • Critically assess for alternative products to briefs
