Peristomal hernias are a pervasive, costly, and distressing problem for people living with permanent ostomies. They experience difficulties with pouch adherence, leakage, increased use of supplies, and reduced quality of life. However, available research suggests that early introduction of a support garment and an appropriately focused exercise and proper body mechanics education program can help prevent development of a peristomal hernia.
This course provides a case study of a facility that developed an interdisciplinary hernia prevention program to address this issue, and illustrates the successful outcomes that this collaborative program generated.
Learning Objective: Through the review of a successful case study, the learner will understand the process for developing a multidisciplinary team.
