Dr. Luis Fernandez, MD, KHS, KCOEG, FACS, FASAS, FCCP, FCCM, FICS, is Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center and Director of Trauma Wound and Trauma Surgery at UT Health East Level 1 Trauma Center in Tyler, TX.

Dr. Fernandez is the co-founder and served as Director of Trauma Surgery and the Head of Trauma Surgery at Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler, Texas. He served as president of the Division of Surgery of Trauma and Critical Surgical Care, Chairman Emeritus, Division of Trauma Surgery / Acute Care, Associate Director of Medical Trauma, Chief of Flight Surgeons and Head of the Care Unit / Surgical Critical Traumatology at CHRISTUS Trinity Hospital Mother Frances from 1993-2019. He is certified by the Board in General Surgery and Critical Surgical Care, Forensic Traumatology and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

He is Vice Chairman, State Guard Association of the United States (SGAUS) Medical Academy and Commander Emeritus, Texas Commandery, MOFW. He holds a commission as a Brigadier General (BG), Texas Medical Rangers, Texas State Guard, now retired, and was the Commander for Texas State Guard, Medical Brigade from July 2009 to January 2014.

Dr. Fernandez resides in Tyler, Texas and has expertise in the care of acute major trauma victims as well as critically ill patients and was a member of the Texas Governor's Emergency/Trauma Advisory Council for over 8 years. His areas of interest include cardiothoracic trauma, peripheral vascular trauma, disaster/military medicine, burns, and abdominal compartment syndrome.
